Best Backdrops for Professional Headshots

Having a professional head-shot is extremely important for anyone in business. In this day and age, it may seem easier to simply snap a picture with your smartphone and call it good, but business people always need to think about the image they are projecting and an unprofessional picture may make your customers think you are unprofessional in your business.

Workers people set isolated over white background.

Whether you are using your head-shot for your company’s website, print advertisements, newsletters or to include with articles you submit to industry publications, you need to work with a professional photographer to get the best results.

One question many photographers get asked is which backdrop is the most popular and would be the best for their personal head-shot. While it might seem like an easy question at first, there is actually quite a lot that goes into the answer. When it comes to professional head-shot backgrounds, less is usually more. The last thing you want is to have those who look at your head-shot to be distracted by a busy background. Backdrops that have a lot going on may also come off as less professional than those that are more sedate.

White backgrounds are probably the most popular for corporate head-shots because they provide a clean backdrop and the viewer is immediately drawn to the face. The only thing to keep in mind when using a white backdrop is where your head-shot will be appearing. If it’s on a website or other medium that is also mostly white, your image may appear to ‘float’. Adding a boarder to the head-shot is an easy way to correct this problem.

On the flip side, backdrops of dark grey or brown can also be very appropriate and attractive for head-shots. Again, there is not too much going on and the viewer can focus on your face rather than what’s going on behind you. If you’re unsure which would be better for your head-shot, most photographs would be happy to take one of each and let you make the decision when you see the proof.

Now, there are always exceptions to the rule, even in business. If you are in a creative type of industry, are trying to brand yourself and business as ‘quirky’ or different or are trying to appeal to children, you might think about getting some ‘out of the box’ shots taken. Adding in some crazy colors, designs or artwork are good ways to really make your head shots stand out from others, but keep in mind that they can be distracting. If you think this is a good idea for your branding, you might want to consider also getting a few shots taken with more sedate backgrounds just in case.

The importance of professional head shots cannot be stressed enough. They’re affordable, they usually taken less than half an hour and they make a world of difference in how you and your business are perceived. A professional photographer should be able to help you choose the best background to help you shine!
